I particularly loved the story about Darius, who calls himself "Lord of the Geeks," in Something Old, Something New by Joyce Sweeney. Loosely organized around the theme of journeys, these stories by award-winning authors are about teens who are transformed by the experiences along the way. Gallo's newest collection, Destination Unexpected (Candlewick, $16.99 221 pp.) maintains the quality of his earlier books. The success of that collection led to Gallo's editing of a number of wonderful themed collections, including Visions, Join In, No Easy Answers and Ultimate Sports. None of the stories had appeared in print before, and all of them were written by authors who specialized in writing for young adults. Gallo turned the tide on short stories for teens with his publication of Sixteen: Short Stories by Outstanding Writers for Young Adults in 1984.
