You can also tell a lot about an artist by looking at their early work. The same could be said of much of Avedon’s photography. In the case of Richard Avedon’s self-portrait (1969, below), we see a man in high key, white shirt positioned off centre against a slightly off-white background, the face possessing an almost innocuous, vapid affectation as though the person being captured by the lens has no presence, no being at all. You can tell a lot about a person from their self-portrait.
